A five-minute blitz presentation entitled “Norms of/and Risk in Experimental Improvised Music” at the online symposium Music and Risk, hosted jointly by Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, Australia and the University of New South Wales.

Risk is a celebrated dimension of ethical experience in experimental improvised music (EIM). But risks always take place against norms, which in EIM are often underestimated. I will argue for turning down the dial on the risk rhetoric and paying closer attention to how norms make it possible.
