La Virata

Every ten minutes by day, every twenty or so by night, a water bus (“vaporetto”) finishes its route at the Rialto bridge and drifts down the Canale Grande toward the Accademia bridge. It pivots in front of the Sant’Angelo station back toward Rialto to retrace its route in the opposite direction. Watching this choreography from the Palazzo Barbarigo della Terrazza, one never fails to be amazed that the boats don’t crash into the building. Lately, a little blue boat headed the other way has been providing a counterpoint as it pendulates between the San Tomà station and Sant’Angelo.
